1 ITEMS OVERVIEW

In Alephino, "Item Record" refers to the physical entity to which a single barcode is related.

Item records are required for circulation activities and for serials control. Each physical copy in the library must have an item record if it is going to be circulated, and it must have an item record for serials check-in.

Item records are dealt with in all the GUI modules. In the Acquisitions module, items can be added when an order record has been selected. In this case, a link from the item record to the order is automatically created.

In the Serials function of the Acquisitions/Serials module, item records are dealt with in the context of serials handling.

In the Circulation module an items list can be used to place a hold request; display loan information; to register that a loaned item was lost, and so on. The Circulation module includes utilities for changing item status and/or location.

The Fast Cataloging utility in the Circulation module creates a bibliographic record and an item record to facilitate loans on the fly of items that have not yet been registered in the system.

The most comprehensive functionality for items is available from within the Cataloging module. This chapter presents items control as reflected in Cataloging.

Item records can also be linked to HOL records. If this link is present, the location information of the item can be managed by the HOL record. This record contains the item's location, collection and sublibrary. In this case, modifying the HOL record also modifies the location information in the item record.
